Florida now stands alone as the only state to turn down millions of dollars Congress allocated to states to reduce the effects of tailpipe emissions for air quality and storm runoff related to climate change. In 2021, Congress allocated $6.4 billion for states and Florida was set to receive $320 million, the third most of any state. The Florida Department of Transportation stated it is turning down the money because ‘The program is an example of government overreach and the politicization of weather’. Environmental groups believe the decision harms Floridians in many ways, especially since improving air quality and vehicle emissions contribute to half of stormwater runoff. Many environmental groups and government representatives do not agree with the decision.
